Twenty-two years ago today, a federal court ordered Microsoft to stop requiring purchasers of its operating system to also install its browser software on their computers. That was just the beginning. Judge Thomas Penfield Jackson would later order Microsoft be split into two companies, but that ruling was overturned on appeal. The case continues to be frequently referenced in Washington. In remarks to state attorneys general yesterday, US attorney general William Barr noted that the coalitions of states investigating Google and Facebook are bigger than the coalition that sued Microsoft along with the Department of Justice. Meanwhile, the group of states suing to block Sprint/T-Mobile offered more evidence to show executives believed consolidation would enable price hikes.
