Kyriakos Fountoukakos is a partner in Herbert Smith’s Brussels office. He is a competition law specialist and deals with all aspects of EU and UK competition law including merger control (acquisitions, hostile takeovers, joint ventures), cartels, antitrust investigations, dominance and competition litigation before the EU Courts. Kyriakos has advised major international companies in a broad range of sectors including (in particular) media, telecommunications, IT, energy, mining, financial services and insurance, transport, pharmaceuticals, consumer goods and manufacturing.

Recent cases include: merger clearances for Arriva (Deutsche Bahn/Arriva), Stanley (Stanley/Black&Decker) and BSkyB (News Corp/BSkyB); cartel work for clients in Europe and the Far East; and litigation in high-profile cases before the EU courts, representing an intervener in the MasterCard interchange fees appeal and an appellant in the Car Glass appeal.

Kyriakos has particular expertise through his background as a European Commission official at DG Competition’s merger taskforce and as a référendaire in the cabinet of the president of the Court of First Instance of the EU (now the EU General Court).

Kyriakos is recognised as a leading competition expert in major legal directories, including The International Who’s Who of Competition Lawyers. He speaks widely on competition-related issues and has authored several articles on competition law. He is co-author of the mergers chapter of the well-known textbook Faull & Nikpay: The EC Law of Competition, co-editor of the mergers chapter of Jones & Van der Woude’s EC Competition Law Handbook, and he sits on the editorial advisory board of CPI Antitrust Chronicle.

Kyriakos studied law and European studies at the University of Athens (LLB), King’s College London (LLM), University of Cambridge (MPhil in European Studies) and Columbia Law School, New York (LLM). He has qualified as a Greek lawyer and as a solicitor in England and Wales. Kyriakos is fluent in English, Greek and French.
